This spring and summer, home decor will "evoke romantic notions of bygone eras," but will still function with tomorrow's technology, according to Trend Bible, a UK-based, new-generation trend-forecasting agency specializing in home interior. Its spring and summer 2011 forecast names four distinct trends, some of which are based off warm-season experiences, including traveling, outdoor activities such as picnics and camping and more.
Voyager
Reminiscent of the 1920s and the Golden Age of Travel, when the journey was just as exciting as the destination, this trend incorporates vintage styles from lavish steam trains and luxury cruises. Trend Bible cites the ornate decor from the Orient Express and adventure literature like The Great Gatsby as inspiration. Some retro home decor you might see includes steamer trunks and stacked suitcases as storage, map motifs on decor and funky woven jacquards inspired by public-transportation upholstery.
Libertine
Showcasing bright hues such as yellow, lime, candy pink and gray, the Libertine trend focuses on outdoor summer living and a "newfound desire for freedom from financial, political and commercial institutions, which begins to impact our attitudes toward the home," according to Trend Bible. "Products and concepts that allow us the freedom to live both indoors and out, to tailor our space to functions and adapt and transport our furniture will be key." Think easily portable yet stylish furniture for multiday festivals and chic, patterned picnic and camping decor. Design motifs featured in this trend include zig-zags, chevrons and 1970s-style prints.
Collector
Consumers will continue to look for home decor that evokes a sense of calmness in the home, such as functional, practical objects with classic appeal. "This look is about pared-down simplicity and taking time to enjoy our environment," according to Trend Bible. Simple, timeless pieces will be grouped together to create mini displays as consumers use these collections in their homes to make personal statements. Offer modern adaptations of classic tchotchkes such as updated Cornish Blue pottery and the Willow Pattern. "Unrefined, natural materials are key, so consider wooden-handled utensils, natural dyes, translucent glazes, speckled finishes and allow authentic, intentional irregularities to show through."
Epicurean
Luxury gets stripped down in this forecast. Instead of choosing ornate furniture and home decor, consumers will begin treasure quality, handcrafted, one-of-a-kind pieces for the home. Art and design will converge to create the new luxury, one that focuses on the construction, materials and genius of the artisan. "Multiplied patterns and intricate repeats reference Islamic art, origami and the latest digital laser cutting technology," according to Trend Bible, and you can look for "highly technical pieces that celebrate decoration in an unostentatious and tasteful manner, intricate detailing, micro patterns and meaningful design."
